December 16, 2011, marks the anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence.  I had the privilege and honor to create the book The Soul of Kazakhstanwhich profiles the Kazakh culture.

The Silk Road had its origin in Kazakhstan, the tulip and the apple originated in Kazakhstan, and the horse was first domesticated on the Kazakh Steppes.  Women have held central roles militarily, politically, and economically in the country for millenniums. Twenty years ago when Kazakhstan regained its sovereignty, one of the first actions taken by the government was to disarm its nuclear arsenal.

Bordered by Russia, China, and the rest of Central Asia, Kazakhstan has become the crossroad of culture and commerce for the region.  With its resourceful and curious people, the country has embraced the opportunities of the past 20 years, developing an ultra modern capital in Astana and a robust relationship with the West to utilize its vast natural resources.

I've selected a few images from the large gallery I am building to illustrate the country, culture, and history.  You're welcome to visit the collection at  http://www.EastepPhotography.com.  See Kazakhstan Gallery.
