This is a book about 12 historical personalities from the city of Guimarães.
That makes it a book about biographies, and therefore, a special book. It narrates the stories of individual lives and achievements. More importantly, it is a book that remarks the role of personal landmarks in our collective history.
We took inspiration from the singular character of those stories and designed from there. Visually, it is a false traditional book, in the way it displays an old style graphic treatment combined with a deviant structure to display the notes. The contemporary touch also comes from the fluorescent pink that is highlighting the typography.
We've tried to keep it simple and good looking, but it could never go as easy.
If a biography tells you the story of an individual, and those combined stories build the history of a city, there should be a very personal and rather unique element to engage the reader with the narrative. Therefore we’ve decided to really make each book one of a kind, adding geometric compositions to the covers, made directly through the overlaying of different silkscreen prints. Each cover ranges from 2 to 5 different layers.
For 1000 books there are 1000 different covers, and in a way, 1000 different stories.
We are quite lucky to have the ability to screen print in-house, and even more fortunate to have very good friends who dare to make possible what would otherwise seem like crazy ideas.
We'd like to thank Margarida Castel-Branco for her dedication and effort put into printing all the covers.
Here's a few shots of the printed planes ready to be cut into two different covers.
