Insight Magazine (Editorial Project)

My first task for this project was to generate ideas for a name for the magazine. I began the brainstorming process and soon figured that the name 'insight' was the best name choice as the purpose of the magazine was to give reader's an understanding of Modernism, and Post Modernism. Once I had decided on a name for the magazine, I could then move onto the ideas process for the masthead. I chose this particular name as it immediately put several ideas into my mind for the masthead, I was able to translate these ideas to paper, experiment, develop and reach my final masthead outcome. The 'in' part in the word 'insight' is seen displayed at a larger scale than the rest of the word and contained in a circular shape. This idea was influenced by magnification. When a magnifying glass passes over a section of text, the text that is in focus appears larger so that it is easier for the reader to recognise. My masthead demonstrates the word 'insight' in a simplistic, yet effective visual manner. The choice of colour for the typography was black because of its bold appearance.

The image shown on the front cover of the magazine above, was taken from a poster that Josef Müller Brockmann produced. I used an aspect of the image shown on a Müller Brockmann poster as it resembled a 'helping hand'. The purpose of this magazine was to give students a helping hand with their studies.
During the ideas process, I made a firm decision that my contents page would be minimalistic, this would enable the information to be the main focus. Using the letterforms from the word 'contents', I was able to align type on the double page spread. The opacity of the letterforms is reduced so that the letterforms do not distract the reader from the content information. Numbers are displayed at a large scale, with the description of what is on each double page spread presented to the right of each number.
I particularly liked the amount of negative space on each double page spread, this would put emphasis on the information displayed. The typeface 'Ostrich Sans Black' was used to define the first paragraph that formed part of each double page spread. Type was also seen at a large scale to highlight an important part of the text, this allowed the reader to determine hierarchy within the information and it also added visual differentation to the text.
Different graphical elements were used from the works of the designer being referred to, on each double page spread. This reminded the reader who they were reading about in a visual manner. The shapes used on this double page spread were taken from the poster shown the the right of the page, the use of these shapes worked well as it formed an alignment for the text to be placed in an organised way.
Typography on the right hand side of the page is seen overlapping the shape, just like it is demonstrated in the poster shown on the left hand side of the double page spread. This maintains consistency and also replicates the way in which Modernist designers worked.
