Role and design of courtyards in the city center, 2009

Abstract

The graduation thesis discusses the potential of the courtyards of Ljubljana’s city centre to become parts of urban open space system. Concerning the structure of space and the nature of uses attached to these places, they mainly belong to private domain. Nevertheless, some of them clearly have the potential to become parts of public space and hence to contribute to the quality of the living environment. The treatise discusses the possibilities of the interaction between private and public domains, seeking for feasible connections between the two. It recognises the fact that courtyards as public spaces depend on active open spaces of the city. It follows the thesis that the scale of the city (the planning scale) and the scale of the courtyard (the scale of design) are interrelated. Investing the network of green areas (urban parks) and other open public spaces (squares and streets), as well as other urban networks, with courtyards, establishes conditions for a more synchronous and interrelated functioning of the open space system. This approach enables the urban open space to be treated as a whole. In the second part the treatise focuses on finding modes of possible connections and interactions between the inner space of the courtyards and the outer space of the town and how this could consecutively change the structure (and design) of courtyards. The conclusion brings some key statements and suggestions for design, applied to some concrete examples.
