Tony Takitani: Tap Essay

Haruki Murakami’s ‘Tony Takitani’ takes the reader on a brief but genuine emotional trip. The short story’s central theme of loneliness makes subtle and overt appearances over time, creating a cyclical reading experience. Converting this experience into an interactive design shifts our role from the reader into the user.

Using Processing, the fundamental statements from Murakami’s ‘Tony Takitani’ were split into five short frames and developed to both challenge and compliment the written word. Designed with touch in mind, gestures of tapping, holding and dragging allow the user to transition through the piece at their own rate, generating a new and personalised reading environment.
