“This to That” explores the idea of imagining cooking as a language. After conducting visual research, including collecting photographs of food and documenting the process of cooking myself, I came to the conclusion that there were several signifiers which tells when something is cooked. Cooking is a rather intuitive process, in which the cook has to “read” these signs and figure out whether the food is made right.

“This to That” focuses on one signifier: color. The book is a catalog where each page is one specific moment during cooking which results in a color. The colors are then arranged in a spectrum, ranging from the lightest visible translucent hue into white, light yellow, orange... to the darkest black.

The typography is set at 175 points, all capitalized. I used Compacta because it is a highly condensed type. From a distance, each page looks like a block of color, turning the catalog into a spectrum.
