This series is about the portrayal of sadness without showing the facial expression of sadness. This series was inspired by a calamity that happened in the Philippines, Typhoon Haiyan. During the time of this typhoon there would be a flood of devastating images shown on television or the Internet. Whenever images of victims are shown there would be an expression of sadness or loss of hope on their faces. For this series  I wanted to portray sadness, but without the facial expression, hence the use of a mask. A person’s facial expression is usually the key components of seeing what they are feeling, if they are happy, mad, and sad, etc. However, a person’s body gesture is also a key contributor to showing a person’s mood. Through this series I wanted to show the importance of body gesture in terms of portraying one’s mood. The use of a black backdrop and black clothing,  symbolizes the idea of sadness taking over people’s lives when they are depressed or facing trials in their lives. It is a representation of how sometimes it is hard to find happiness when things are not in the best situations. The purpose of the black surrounding is to show the darkness in people’s lives when they are sad, depressed, in lost of hope, etc.
