POLYGAMY- Three wives to heaven

TABOO- POLYGAMY
Hanging mobile
2015

A type-based project focusing on polygamy plural marriages practiced in certain religious groups and cults.

Polygamy and the practice of plural marriages have been practiced within certain religious groups. With strong faiths and beliefs, members of the community are brought up and led by prophets believing that having multiple wives was God’s will.

A certain religious group was led to believe that the optimal minimum number of wives to have to land one the highest place in heaven was three. Hence the copy of this project - THREE WIVES TO HEAVEN

I wanted to highlight the strong psychological beliefs and culture of these groups that were brought up and raised in such beliefs seen in modern society as potentially taboo, highlighting the stark contrast and paradox of what's socially accepted in a community and what's not.

This project was represented in the form of a hanging mobile and the rosary. Inspired by baby mobiles hung above cots, this piece consists of beads and a crucifix referenced to the spiritual rosary.

I chose to express this in the form of a baby mobile as I wanted to mirror the 'hypnotic' effect of the beliefs and practices these religious groups implemented at a young age, almost like a ‘hypnotising’ effect from birth.
