To See Beyond Our Appearances

This interactive structure is installed in Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, a sculpture park located in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

We tend to ignore the intrinsic human qualities of others as we walk around in the public; we don’t perceive others as entities with lives just as complex and aspirations just as concrete as our own. We easily form judgments of others through superficial cues, and forget the inherent similarities we share. This structure attempts to subvert these social tendencies and connect two strangers on a simple yet emotional level. It takes on an utilitarian appearance similar to that of public facilities such as playgrounds and phone booths, and encourage a casual yet intimate interaction between two people. Participants cannot see each other directly, but can press into the latex sheet to create an extrusion in the shape of their hands on the opposing side; they may choose to avoid the others’ hands, or to press on the same spot. The human hand is a vital component of communication, and can embody a person when it is the only part of the body present. This structure will thus emphasize the humanistic presence of each participant, and allow them to understand each other in a new perspective.
