Time Spies - Educational Brand Identity and Illustrated

Time Spies - Educational Theatre Workshop

This brief asked for the creation of a brand identity and wider project identity for the a theatrical workshop that aimed to teach children about the famous British figures. In addition to the project identity the brief also asked for several fully illustrated sample spreads for a workbook that would accompany the programme of events.

A broader concept entitled 'Time Spies' was developed in order to generate an angle that would engage a young audience with the historical material. In order to add credibility to this concept the programme was set within a fictional framework of a government body entitled the 'Ministry for Historical Intelligence', whereby the children would play the part of time travelling spies/detectives discovering information about the past.

Through the duality of this concept two linked but separate logos were developed. The first was a roundel for the 'Ministry' the second was the time spies project logo, which was designed with an interchangeable central roundel that could house illustrations of different historical figures, depending on whom was being taught about

For the second part of the brief I choose to illustrate the life of Sir Winston Churchill through several double page spread pertaining to several lesser know and key period of his life. The pages were very much image driven and create in a loose and slightly naive style using scanned hand drawn images sketched in Japanese brush pens, which were then colour digitally. The copy was written in such a way as to lend itself to interesting and humorous illustrations that would help engage the children further and accompany the humour of the scenes being acted out before them.
