    SAMSA is like a lighthouse in the ocean, a beacon of hope. We pulled this concept through in the book’s design – from the die-cuts in the front cover, to the page numbers and the illustrations of the lighthouses in South Africa. By connecting it to South African lighthouses, we made it clear that SAMSA is a steadfast leader looking outward and leading the way forward. Each chapter is named after a specific South African lighthouse. This concept is further underpinned by the copy, positioning SAMSA as the lighthouse that stands tall, that shines, guards and calls, our nation to a better future. Read Less

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) is a Department of Transport public entity that was established on the 1st April 1998. SAMSA’s mandate is to ensure the safety of life and property at sea, to prevent and combat pollution of the marine environment and to promote our nation’s maritime interests. 
 
Challenge
Annual reports are often perceived as visually unappealing, technical documents with no concept or story. We were briefed
to design SAMSA's 2014 Annual report in a way that challenged this perception, and also communicated SAMSA’s vision;
to lead South Africa towards a better future and to create a legacy of prosperity.
 
Solution
We designed a visually engaging Annual Report that can be used as a marketing tool, but also tells SAMSA’s unique
and remarkable story of transformation and democracy.
