Marine Awareness & Prevention Integrated Training (UMAPIT) is a base level, behavioral health training for the United States Marine Corps. Every new Marine receives this training in either Recruit Training (aka Boot Camp) or soon after (MOS school).
The client approached us wanting a new approach for the young audience (18-22 y/o). The course we delivered contained these 5 videos imbedded into a powerpoint and supported by a detailed instructor's guide.
Section One focuses on the little stresses that Marines face every day. What is unique about this video is that the instructional designer for this project and I focus-grouped about 30 Marines, recorded what they said, had that transcribed, then built the script using nearly 100% of their own words. I then used the voice actors from the other videos to rerecorded the lines and edited it together with new and old B-roll and some stock footage.
Section Two focuses on the discussion of Thinking Mistakes, the first being Expecting Perfection.
This is probably my favorite of the bunch as I think most people, not just Marines can identify with "The Feelings and Facts" Thinking Mistake, especially how it is presented in this scenario. PFC Smith feels he is not wanted by his fellow Marines, so he rationalizes that feeling into fact.
This video tackles the "Jumping to Conclusions" Thinking Mistake. The Lance Corporal overhears an unsubstantiated rumor about what score will be needed to make the next rank. She immediately predicts that she will not make rank as if it had already happened.
This video deals with both the "Assuming Control" and "Black/White Thinking" thinking mistakes. It shows that you cannot control the feelings, emotions and actions of another person and the importance of recognizing the world as shades of gray, rather than putting things in terms of black/white, good/bad, pass/fail, etc.
