Difficult Retouching

Difficult Retouching
A lot of agencies have staff retouchers, but I get called when it's the impossible jobs – the one's staff retouchers can't handle.
American Pie - "Take a round pizza and make it in the shape of the United States." That was the creative director's request. We aim to please.
Belly Flop - One in a series of images in the Ciprodex "Something's Missing" campaign. Because of the number of images used for the campaign, original photography was too costly. Retouching stock photos to remove the "something" was the preferred, though difficult, solution.
Hispanic Woman - Series of 3 retouched photos where distracting characteristics were removed while keeping the age of the women evident.
Black Woman - Face was shiny and hands were dry and cracked. Skin tone had to be less blotchy.
White Woman - Besides lots of moles, woman apparently had stroke that effected her ability to smile evenly on both sides.
Boy's Room - In this retouching, the photo had to be extended considerably on both sides (including adding a 2nd pillow). The lighting was changed to be more the feeling of nighttime... including making the outside night sky show through the curtains. A step-by-step description of this retouching appeared in SBS Digital Design and is available for downloading in the DOWNLOADS page under the ABOUT menu.
Bus Stop - Considerable time and cost was realized by shooting the background location separately from the woman who was shot in the studio the same day as other shots were taken. The lighting on set was designed to match the lighting of the night location.
Nurse and Patient - During a photo shoot you get the models being photographed to give you just the right expression... but not always in the same shot. Here 2 studio shots of the 2 models were combined with 2 location images. Also, because the reflection in the tabletop didn't extend enough into the foreground, the shot of the 2 people and the background were flipped upside down and ghosted back to form the full reflection.
Moon House - This is the first image created for the Sonata (prescription sleep aid) consumer campaign. It established the look for the entire campaign. In total, 10 images were retouched to give each this dream-like appearance. They were used in a variety of print media and given to Industrial Light & Magic to follow for the look of the 30-second TV commercial.
Moon Hotel - The art director wanted to move the Colony Hotel in South Beach, Florida to the desert... and leave all the other buildings in Florida.
Pharmacy - Here too, considerable savings was realized by shooting the location first and then the models in the studio. A varied amount of blur was added to the background so that the shelves further in the background were more out of focus giving the illusion of limited depth of field and greater emphasis on the patient and pharmacist.
Winning Jockey - A blending of 3 photos, a lot of silhouetting, and adding branding colors—plus lettering on the blanket result in this image.
No Strings - Considerable reconstruction was required to extend the background on both sides, remove the strings, and rebuild the girl's shoulder, arm and hand that were hidden behind the strings. Another in the "Something's Missing" campaign.
Shoot No - Part of the brands "Something's Missing" campaign. Man with umbrella is silhouetted from one picture and put into crowded street scene. The cloth from the umbrella is removed leaving only the frame.
Boy Skier - Client directions included, no trees, blue sky, wider and deeper image area, removal of logos, and changing coat to branding color.
Lights of Broadway - Both the before and after images were used to dramatize glare reduction of polarized lenses in advertising. To create the glare, the Alien Skin Eye Candy 5 Photoshop filter "Squint" was applied at different settings to multiple layers of the same image and then combined together masking out certain areas and exposing others.
Warehouse - A study in how to take an ordinary, ugly warehouse photo and make it art. In addition to selectively darkening areas, a zoom lens filter was used to focus attention on the forklift driver and give a sense of vast storage of tubing. Logo and tagline also by Boundless Creativity.
Zipper Nose - With only a partial zipper stock image that was in perspective, the end image is a zipper in the shape of a nose with a nasal spray zipper pull.
