St. Peter's Church in Meran, South Tyrol, Italy

This church, looking down to the ancient route from Swiss glaciers in the west to Venice and the Mediterranian Sea is not likely to be an important place. Built upon the remains of an even older religious place it soon became the centre of the religious life of thousands of farmers living in the mountains, who had wo cross the summits of the mountains to do their religious service. Passing by an a walk you might not recognize its meaning which it has had throughout history. It was a place crusaders, German kings and ordinary knights passed by on their way to the south looking forward to meeting the Pope, and it witnessed the historic fights of the people from Tyrol to gain independance from their rulers, their fight to make agriculture and life possible even despite the most unfavorable conditions of life. Doing the prayers for Easter and Christmas here was a huge hardship because it meant a way sometimes as long as up to hundred miles to arrive here, and to be buried here after the bodies had crossed the mountains for their last "walk". But even though, it is a very nicde place, which even as a small church it offers the same tranquility and peace as the huge cathedrals offer. Reming there for a while, watching the old frescos might give the feeling of being able to plunge into the spirit of the times the knights lived, most of all because this old church is surrounded by old castles which underline the sentiment of the past.
