"The Migration of He" Book Project

The Migration of He
32 Page Book
This was the final project of my first year in my Graphic Design BA course. Using the word transition as a starting point, we had to produce an A5, 32 page book, stitch-bound and hard backed with a wrap around dust cover.

I have taken a personal approach whereby I based the book on the migration of my father from Pakistan to England from the time when foreign workers were needed to assist the stability of the country. I could have taken many routes from this one subject but focused particularly on his experience of migration and the way he dealt with language issues over the years as he tried to adjust in England.

The book is very much a typographical experimentation of two languages. From the first spread, the story begins hand written in urdu and slowly starts to develop into English from a word to a couple of words to a paragraph. Being one of the first foreigners, he had no knowledge of the British language and therefore struggled to communicate amongst the native citizens. Therefore, the idea of the Urdu - English transition was to represent this. Therefore, those that can't understand urdu read this book would perhaps understand his difficulty.

As this was particularly personal to me, I didn't want to publicise the story as my fathers story but as a migrator's story, hence the reason that I have referred to my father as 'He' or 'Him' and when my mother is mentioned then I used 'She' or 'Her'. Some pages also consist of old photographs of him, which I have covered using the stripes inspired by old air mails which he used to write on and send home. The use of the stripes is to keep the momentum of his anonymity continued.

For the cover and dust cover, I have kept them simple, only using the colour scheme of blue and red has been used. For the type on the dust cover, I have used Letraset Letter Transfers.
