What I like about illustration is that is give you the opportunity to visually tell a story. I love diving into new subjects and to present the information in a critical manner. Here you find two personal projects. The first one is made for an upcoming exhibition in Groningen, Illustratie57 about Instinct. In February Dutch soccer hooligans damages an Bernini fountain in Rome, leaving it covered in empty bottles and trash. Why would these people be so ignorant and neglecting to see the consequences of their actions? While reading more about hooliganculture, it’s fascinating to find out that the riots are not as unorganized and cheotic as they seem. Agreements are made between supporters and only other hooligans are involved in the fights. Normal citizens or other soccer supporting crowd are not being dragged in the violence. In this illustration I’ve combined the hooligans with an old Roman statue, in which violence and fighting spirit is glorified. Both worlds seem very far apart on the one hand but on the other hand the hooligan culture and the classical culture don’t seem so far apart from each other when it comes to violence.

In the end, people just like to fight
