The Pencil Light is a concept I developed together with DiBari Innovation Design LLC, prior of serving as their Creative Coordinator and Development Manager. The studio puts together multiple architects and artists under the direction of Vito Di Bari, in order to design the city of the future. Every work of DiBari Innovation Design focus on putting together a very iconic style with cutting edge technologies. This is also the main concept behind this project, the Pencil Light.
A technical partner came to the firm after having developed a solar system able to make a street lamp completely autonomous from the grid, by wrapping it around with photovoltaic panels. I worked for the firm by first researching figurative metaphors that could transform this system into an iconic urban design. Through an extensive period spent researching, sketching, and revisiting the material, we arrived to the conclusion the ‘knotted pencil' was the optimal match between iconic form and technical requirements for the technology to work. I then developed the whole concept transforming it from a sketch to an actual 3D geometry ready to be rendered for presentation purposes and qualified to go through a further engineering phase.
