Trouble, ISTD 2015, Commendation

Trouble was produced in response to the Milestones brief set by ISTD (International Society of Typographic Designers.)

When one thinks of modern-day war, our minds may travel to the Middle East or even further afield, but one of the deadliest conflicts of modern times occurred right on our doorstep in Northern Ireland. Referred to now merely as ‘The Troubles,’ the thirty-year war between Irish Republicans and Ulster Loyalists was a hugely significant turning point in Irish and British history. It changed Northern Ireland forever, heavily influencing contemporary law and order, politics and daily life for its inhabitants.

Trouble chronologically investigates the tumultuous three decades from a retrospective and neutral viewpoint, identifying the major milestones of the conflict, and demonstrates the fraught journey from longstanding civil unrest to the eventual peace process. The publication is split into two parts, ‘Violence’ and ‘Politics.’ To portray the thirty-year narrative, the publication balances informative body copy, documentary photography, and dramatic infographics.

Trouble serves to document, contemplate, and memorialise Northern Ireland’s past, reframing the conflict for a modern and liberal audience.
