The three posters I have created are minimal graphic pieces exploring the factors that differentiate explicit, erotic art from pornography - a topic I’ve been exploring throughout the semester in both Integrative Studio and Seminar. During the research period we had to discover and investigate different artists and styles, I discovered the Memphis group, an Italian design group that emerged in the 60’s, who founded the basis of the kitschy, random patterns and imagery we often associate with the 80’s. A few artists who had a significant impact on my project and the direction I chose to take it in are Peter Judson, Tom Wesselman, Yoko Honda, and Patrick Nagel. Although I do not wish to state a definite answer to the question “Art or Porn?” that I pose, the series' playful imagery and colours in contrast to its sexually suggestive content are meant to make the viewer examine their own personal reaction to explicit imagery, and what that may mean in regards to their overall opinions on art.
