I know you do. Or at least something similar. We all have our fantasies where we are the protagonists and save the princess, or the prince if you are a woman.
Video games, movies, anime, they all feed our fantasies and make us wish we were living inside their worlds, at least maybe a little. That is what makes them so popular and what made conventions and cosplay so successful.
Being the one you admire
Don't get me wrong, you are perfect just the way you are. However you can't deny the fact that you would adore being a famous wizard for a weekend and everyone to recognize you.
Imagine hundreds if not thousands of people coming together for a weekend, most of them dressed and acting like their
favorite fictional character, sharing stories and maybe even role playing in character.
Sure there used to be people that called this type of fellas nerds and geeks. Nowadays, sometimes they still do, but we take a little pride in it and no offense. Others may say that cosplay promotes misogyny. How blinded they all are.
First of all, we get to escape from our daily routines and have fun with like minded people. As for the misogynist part, correct me if I'm wrong but no one forced these women to dress up provocatively, it's just like their favorite character is dressed. If they want to feel sexy and badass at the same time, it's their right and choice to do so.
In my opinion this whole negative view and misconceptions do nothing to harm the spirit of the fans. They will keep doing what they love to do and in time only grow in numbers.
How can I join?
Fair question. If you would like to attend such a meeting you can always look it up on the web and see when and where is the next convention being held and start preparing. Prepare your costume or choose to buy from a Cosplay shop in US. That one focuses on anime costumes and does a great job at it, but you may want to look for a few other sites as well if you prefer a movie protagonist for example.
Of course you don't have to put on a costume, it's not mandatory or anything. But know that most likely you will be in the minority there. On the other hand, you don't have to spend a fortune from day 1. Start small and remember, this is an opportunity to have fun.
