Sikhs embody the qualities of a"Sant-Sipahie"—asaint-soldier. One must have controlover one's internal vices and be able tobe constantly immersed in virtuesclarified in the Guru Granth Sahib. ASikh must also have the courage todefend the rights of all who arewrongfully oppressed or persecutedirrespective of religion, colour, casteor creed. Baptized Sikhs are initiatedinto the Khalsa, the Khalsa is"Akal Purakh de fauj" - theArmy of God.
Guru Gobind Singh (10th guru ofSikhism) clearly choose these words verydeliberately - He did not state that theKhalsa was the army of the Khalsa or anarmy of the Sikhs or the army of Punjab- but an Army of God whose function wasthe protection and safeguarding of allthe peoples of God regardless ofreligion, colour, race or creed.
