School Nursing Projects

SCHOOL NURSING is lots of fun. I am assigned to an elementary school and work with kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade. We have about 500 students and 50 staff members. In addition to the typical activities for nurses in a school setting, I also like to teach. I do this in numerous ways. Here I will share samples of projects I have worked on recently. Hope you enjoy it as much as the students and staff at my school.

BULLETIN BOARDS
Old Man Winter

Dry skin can cause many problems with students. Rough, dry skin, nose bleeds, and chapped lips to name a few. This bulletin board is to bring attention to this problem and offer suggestions on prevention and treatment

Kids LOVED the bloody nose. I cut out pictures from old magazines, pasted them onto bulletin board paper, them laminated for yearly reuse and trade/loan program with other school nurses.
Employee Wellness campaign- Dressed up an actual 5 lb artificial blob of fat in a bikini- Scary!

STOP n GO Foods

Had the kids cut out pictures of healthy foods that gives energy and makes you GO and contrasted that with unhealthy junk foods that STOP you from living a full life. Again, cut them out, pasted to poster board, then laminated. Played a stop and go games as well.
Sun Safety

Used old stickers and recycled ripped posters and some simple artwork to design this scene. Even made a "sand dune retainer fence" from tongue depressors for a realistic look. Every year some of the kids come to me for sunburns.

Energizers

This was the bulletin board from the ECU RN clinical that I supervised. (see ECU RN student project) We took digital pictures, printed them on a color printer, laminated, cut them out, and placed on board. The kids loved the ECU students and we gave them lots of visibility. They acted out lots of exercises for the kids to copy.
Cool interactive board. Kids could open doors to see healthy choices on left, poor choices on right.
Wuzzy Bear is a student's best pen-pal. Kids write letters asking health questions and Wuzzy writes back with good advice in the voice of a 6 year old.
 SPECIAL PROJECTS
Teacher First Aid Kits. These were made from recycled crystal lite plastic canisters and covered with laminated pictures. I had students fill them with paper thermometers, small and large band-aids, gloves, safety pins, handi-wipes, alcohol pads. Of course, they are refillable.
Designed Thank You cards from original artwork of students. Great was to say thanks to all the business who donated items, or for volunteers who help out.
Chapped Lips Quick Fix Kits- Used donated old film canisters and filled some with Vaseline, and another with Q-Tips, cute decorated bag. Distributed to all teachers. Really reduced lost instructional time from classroom.
Energizer Chart- Made charts for all classrooms to keep track of how many Energizers were completed each days. Little man moves up each time.
Autistic and some non-verbal students prefer to communicate through symbols. I devised a 20 page document filled with handy regularly used nursing requests and questions to put every child at ease in my healthroom.
 VIDEOS
This is a short video showing what the health room looks like and highlights some health education.
This video was made as a humorous alternative to the somewhat drier version of the Blood Borne Pathogen annual review.
I serve as site clinical preceptor for the BSN students from the area
This video was planned, written, directed, organized by the students at RBE. I did the editing and producing. Very fun project.
This is an example of one of my Xtranormal movies. I wrote the script, did the characters, animated them, chose facial expressions, sound effects, backgrounds and camera angles. I thought this would be a fun way for kids to learn about germs.
This is a Blabberize example I made for my webpage. Lets me have an alter-ego.
DATA COLLECTION
Above is an example of some of the automation I brought to many of our forms.
This is one sheet of about 85 in a templated, linked workbook spreadsheet to capture all the nurse visits. I can use this data to share with my principal, compile annual report data for my school, auto graph data, data mine, sort, and use to make decision about my practice.
Examples of data graphically represented such as in a report to principal presented at a staff meeting.
