SUMMATIVE ACTIVITY

This Summative Activity is worth 30% of final grade of Animation course.

Attention Students!

Create a new Summative Unit project in your Behance portfolio. All your work completed in this Summative Unit must be posted in your Summative Unit. Be sure to Identify new activities with a new title, for example "part 1," or "part 2," etc

Minimum group size: 2 students

Maximum group size: 4 students

PROJECT SCOPE:

What you are working on! Disney (not really) has asked Redwood Studios to create the next animated short. This year Disney is trying to focus on the theme "Canadiana", and their story of choice must revolve around the day of a "snow character" and a Canadian animal. The animated short will be 1 minute in length and must be character driven. Redwood Studios is not sure of secondary characters, and setting. Your job is to create the original animated short in a style & technique of your choice.

HINT:

Research some Disney shorts to get a better understanding of story and character. Consider the realistic number of characters.

TASK & Assessment:

For this summative activity students must create an animated short (60 seconds long) using any of the animation techniques developed in this course. Animations must be created following the identified requirements presented below.

- Use Style 3 for notes and text
- Use embed media
- Use text tool to post notes, titles and sub-titles
- Use Upload FIle to add images

Part 2 - Pitch, Storyboard & Concept Art:

Component 1 - Text Pitch:

Due Date: January 9

• Pitch your animation idea, approach and techniques using a text editor. This is not just a synopsis of your story, but also a written plan on how you plan on making this animated video.

• Generate 15-20 story-points

• Use technical terminology in pitch

Component 2 - Storyboard:

Due Date: January 12

• Create a visual storyboard based on your 15-20 story-points

• Include Title and Credit frames

Component 3 - Digital Concept Art:

Due Date: January 12

• Create concept drawings for at least one character, four assets/objects and the animation setting (including graphic assets.)

Portfolio Posting:

• Pitch (Style 1)
• Post text. Iinclude 2 photos of process. Include subtitle descriptons (do not use student names).

• Storyboard (Style 1)
• Post photos of your storyboard

• include 2-3 photos of process. Include subtitle descriptons (do not use student names).

Part 3 - Asset, Audio & Character Development:

Component 1 - Assets:

Students must...

- create a minimum of 4 assets to interact in animated scenes

- create assets which are uniformed with animation story

- photograph asset and post under "part 3" title. Include subtitle descriptions

Component 2 - Audio:

Due Date: January 17

Students must...
- use a royalty free or a composed soundbed in animated movie. Post Song name, artist and URL site under "part 3"
- create or use royalty free 3-5 foley art sound effects and embed into animation
- Credit all audio at the end of your animation.

Component 3 - Character:

Due Date: January 17

Students must...
- create a poseable character(s) demonstrating "appeal" to interact in animated scenes
- photograph character(s) and post under "part 3" title. Include subtitle descriptions

Part 4 - Application of Principles of Animation:

Due Date: January 25

FPS: 24 fps
Duration: 60 seconds
Save as: FirstLastName_Summative.(project extension)
Exported as: FirstLastName_Summative.mp4 (H.264 video format)

Animation Principles (Final Animation):
There is effective application of all 12 principles of animation outlined in this course, such as exaggeration, anticipation, squash and stretch, secondary motion.

Part 5 - Final animation, optical illusion, general flow, sound and aesthetics

Assessment:

Acting (Final Animation)
The characters are actors in the scene using expressions of emotion, posing, and movement to provoke empathy and emotion in the audience, and drive the action of the story

Timing (Final Animation)
The timing of actions within the scene is consistent between characters and supports the story. Actions by one character affect the actions of another in a manner that flows consistently.

Physicality (Final Animation)
Movement within the animation displays the interaction between characters and interaction with physical objects including the influence of mass and gravity.
