Porcelain pendants

This Series is inspired by:
1. sedimentary rocks, where layers of material are deposited and compressed over time to create durable rock with beautiful banding effects.
2. Wise words from Michelangelo, who said, "Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it."

These pendants are made using a modified form of slipcasting, a process in which liquid clay (slip) is poured into plaster molds, where it transforms into a solid clay form as the plaster draws moisture out of the slip. In my process, colored slip is carefully poured layer upon layer, which allows me to control how the color moves through the depth of the clay, whether I'm creating a subtle gradient effect or punchy bands of color.

After the clay dries, I fire it at 1800 degrees so that the piece is durable enough to be worked. I then shape each piece by hand using a rotary grindstone and 400-grit sandpaper to reveal varying intensities of color. Glaze and white gold luster are carefully applied before the piece is fired again.
