I had the opportunity to design and animate a geometric band of animal characters that were used in an interactive display booth to announce the 2014 Subaru Forester in NYC. Read Less
I was hired to help with the illustration work for an app that Subaru would use for it's debut of the 2014 Subaru Outback. The idea was to create an app that allowed users to interact with characters who were part of a band. The characters could be placed on a stage to create unique songs depending on how they were mixed and matched. I helped with the decision to use animals as the characters and which instruments should be matched to each animal character. They were looking for a very specific 3D low-poly style for the look and feel of the app.
The project started with initial sketches of 15 different characters.
MODELING, COLOR & RIGGING
After the sketches were approved, I moved on to modeling, adding color & rigging each character in 3D.
ANIMATION + SOUND
After each character was modeled and rigged, I began to animate. One of the most challenging parts of this project was to work with a recording artist who supplied me with audio clips that I needed to animate each character to.
The unique audio tracks really helped bring each character to life, and once the characters were combined to make up the band, the result was spectacular.
SCENE & SETTING
I was also responsible for the design of the landscape and stage setting that the characters would play on.
The best projects are the ones that stretch and push you to learn and experiment with the unknown. I had little experience in animation and character rigging and this project challenged me to learn so much about both. The project was a huge success for both my client and myself, and it was one of my favorite pieces of work I’ve had the opportunity to work on.
