The aim of this assignment was to make mundane information accessible and graphically interesting through the manipulation of text, composition, colour an graphic elements. Matariki is a celebration of, people, culture, language and spirituality. I wanted to suggest a clear nights sky without making the calendar appear cliché. I chose to use bright blue and white copy to suggest the bright stars and to create a celebratory tone. To create hierarchy, the main headings are in uppercase and sans serif (Maori Gill Sans). The body copy is in serif (Adobe Jenson Pro) for legibility purposes. I first printed on gloss white stock but found that it was too harsh, appeared tacky and creased when I folded it. So I printed the final on slightly textured, off white stock which gave it a richer and more traditional look. I thought this combined nicely with my contemporary typographic approach.
