Dynamics of Light & Color

Academics
This theoretical course is a branch of another course I impart called Visual Aesthetics, and it’s focused on giving students tools to analyse and control images. Usually directed at students of 3d and 2D animation, illustration, photography and film studies, the course contents range from light physics to color theory. When the course is imparted to 3D-focused students, it’s expanded to cover introductions to digital color, 3d illumination and digital compositing.
The course consists of:
Light physics
Light physics introduces the most fundamental concepts of light, covering particle motion, electromagnetic radiation, the visible spectrum, and the trichromatic system of the human eye and visualization systems.
Surface Phenomena
In this part, the course covers the interactions of light with objects in the atmosphere of earth, reflection, refraction and absortion.
Lighting Design
Lighting design explores the application of light in the creation of visual images, film, 3D and illustration.
Shadows
This is the second part of ligthing design, and it covers the aesthetic and technical aspects of shadows.
Color Harmony
This is the first part of one of the most important aspects of the course, color and contrast. In this section, color harmonies are explained ( monochrome, analogous, complementary, triadic, etc. ) using examples from ancient paintings to contemporary films.
Color Contrast
Color contrast deals with the compositional techniques of color, and the 7 stablished contrasts in art theory: Value, hue, saturation, complementary, simultaneous, temperature and proportion.
