The handcrafted aspects of the pre-digital printing
in the design experience of a card game
Bachelor's degree / 2015

The work explores the handcrafted aspects of the pre-digital printing through the design and the self-production of a card game. Card games were already produced during the 5th Century with xylography, a printing technique that precedes the typographic one.
The idea comes from the desire to experiment materials and machinery, in the attempt of recovering a concrete design, which is often neglected by university education; despite the presence of digital devices that shape and influence our actions, experiences in countertrend keep growing, as a sign that the manual and physical aspects of the creative process are essential parts of the project itself. My graduation project is composed of three distinct but related parts which analysis: the recovery of traditions and the birth of youth experiences in countertrend in Italy; the physical, manuals and material aspects of pre-digital printing and conclusively a direct approach to various techniques through the design and implementation of a game, which took place in the Betterpress Lab in Rome.
A short video presentation of the project shows the different phases of the creation process.
