Kolhapuri chappals date back to the 18th century, when they were mainly used by farmers and fieldworkers. Today, however, Kolhapuris have become a fashion statement. Their ability to reinvent themselves to suit different tastes is what makes them popular.

Existing retail stores: 1. Kolhapuris are sold as part of a collection of other footwear. 2. Craftsmen sell the footwear on the footpath.

Scenario:
1. Kolhapuris are often perceived as ‘cheap footwear’, of ‘poor quality’
2. No exclusive space to sell Kolhapuris.
3. Users are often fooled into buying fake Kolhapuris.
4. The craftsmen often don’t get credit for the footwear they make and hence the handmade footwear is on the verge of diminishing.
