Project365: Oroville

This week's theme features my local community: Oroville, Butte County, CA, USA.  We may not be a tourist hot spot, but there is plenty of history and outdoor recreation here to enjoy!

Day 670 [4-20-15] "Oroville Dam Spillway" - This spillway can handle 250,000 cu.ft./sec: that's about 45,000 bathtubs each second. As the heart of the California State Water Project, Oroville Dam is the tallest in the U.S.A., standing an impressive 770ft tall.  Oroville, CA.
Day 671 [4-21-15] "Lake Oroville" - This reservoir has a staggering capacity of 3.5 million acre feet of water - enough to cover 38,000 miles of 4-lane freeway under 10ft of water (43,560ft³ per acre foot spead on a 76ft wide highway).  Lake Oroville is the heart of the California State Water Project.  About 70% of the water it provides goes to urban areas of Southern California (San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Ventura, & Orange Counties) and the Bay Area (Napa, Solano, Alameda, & Santa Clara counties), while 30% goes to Central Valley agriculture.  It is currently at 51% capacity and dropping daily.
Day 672 [4-22-15] "Thermalito Afterbay" - A 42,000ft dam sits at the edge of town, creating even more recreation and water storage.  Oroville, CA.
Day 673 [4-23-15] "Thermalito Diversion Pool" - The 40 mile Brad Freeman Trail wraps around this peaceful reservoir; great for kayaking too!  Oroville, CA.
Day 674 [4-24-15] "Foothills Life" - The western half of Oroville lies in the Sacramento Valley, while the eastern half extends into the foothills - offering scenic living, especially on sunny days.
Day 675 [4-25-15] "South Table Mountain" - Both North & South Table Mountains are basaltic plateaus - remains of an ancient volcano.  The area has numerous canyons and shallow caves plus seasonal waterfalls and vernal pools that form during the rainy months of winter and spring.  Oroville, CA.
Day 676 [4-26-15] "Feather River Nature Center" - Nature runs right through the middle of town.  This area can be found less than a mile from historic, downtown Oroville, CA and features the Feather River, Bath House, fish hatchery, fish hatchery dam, and Thermalito Diversion Dam.
