Duracell Battery Packaging Design
Problem
The sellablility of a product seems to come from it’s use, demand, and popularity. These factors are affected by the packaging most of the time. In the recent years, consumers have alternated between shop- ping at the stores and shopping online. Even though online orders do not require packaging because consumers already know what they are getting, a whole bunch of material used in packaging is still used.
There are many over packaged items in every store. In a business per- spective, elaborately designed packaging sells the item. In a consumers perspective, the packaging is only to give information on the product and will be garbage once the item is taken out of.
The average battery packaging consists of 2 materials Cardboard and clear plastic covering.
Does the average consumer really need to see the battery to know it’s a battery? Probably not.
Does the average consumer really need to see the battery to know it’s a battery? Probably not.
When a consumer buys a pack of new batteries, where do the old ones end up?
Most likely they end up in the trash bin to be thrown out
Most likely they end up in the trash bin to be thrown out
the next garbage collection day.
80-85% of electronic products were discarded in landfills or incinerators
12.5 % of electronic waste is currently recycled
Objective
The aim of this project would be to reduce the amount of different material used for packaging an item.
I would like to focus on the packaging of batteries.
Batteries have always had the same generic packaging for decades. It consists of a large piece of cardboard material as a backing and a large piece of clear plastic so consumers can see the battery.

Process
The New Battery Pack
There would be 2 compartments, one for New and one for Used batteries. When the user is finished with a battery, all they would have to do is to push it through the opening to the 'battery' and when it fills up, it can be separated from the box compartment. Users can either Mail it to the recycling center (with a prepaid postage sticker) or grab it and drop it off at the closest recycling center.
The design allows itself to stand apart from other brands, can be used to collect used batteries and is able to be recycled. This may also teach curious children about electronics recycling.
