Environmental Awareness Project Using Waste Materials
Sevalaya, Tamil Nadu, India
I hosted a 5-day art camp at the Sevalaya Orphanage, Chennai. The theme of the camp focused on waste management, environmental awareness and recyclable art. The children created sculptures influenced by their natural environment, made out of waste material that they collected from the nearby Kasuva village as well as the orphanage itself.

The program involved a guided walk around the Kasuva village where the children discussed the project with the villagers and collected material, at the same time mapping out their journey marking where the items were gathered from. They were asked to work together in groups which enabled them to bounce ideas off one another and support each other. The teamwork used to create the art strengthened the concept of the project since the children learned that they need to work together as a community to protect the environment.

Thanks to Mai Lai, founder of Children's Art Village.
