DESIGN REFLECTION

The concept of this project was to create a chair that was made out of recycled materials that would suit the BOS brand. This Stool was designed with the BOS ice tea cans in mind and is made from scrap PVC piping and old curtain rails that were found at a scrap yard in Alberton. Materials such as recycled polystyrene from packaging boxes have also been used. When choosing materials I wanted to use ones that were difficult to recycle or re-use, rather then just re-purposing wood. I wanted to set my self a bigger challange to create a material that would surprise the viewer.  I decided to design a short stool that was 450mm in height and a seat width of 400mm. My aim for this stool was to make it out of as much recycled and re-used/re-purposed materials as possible while still keeping an elegant and playful appeal. The challenge I set for myself was to find a material that I could transform into a completely new shape and texture in order to surprise the user when finding out what the chair they are sitting on is made from. This is what led me to using polystyrene that I had melted in acetone, changing its structure and creating a completely new material that barely resembles polystyrene or its characteristics. The visual fetchers of this stool are based around the shape of the BOS ice tea cans. I used the PVC pipes in order to replicate the long and slender idea of their cans.  The thin wooden legs add an elegant aspect to the stool that relates to the BOS ice tea cans. As BOS shows through the use of colour blocking, bold logo and typeface design that their brand has a loud and playful character. With this in mind I decided that by leaving some of the PVC pipes hollow and not covering them all in the melted polystyrene, it adds a fun and interesting visual aspect to the design that fits the BOS brands image.
