In May 2013 Christchurch Art Gallery celebrated its tenth birthday with a burst of art in the city – a curated outdoor programme called Populate! that included large scale murals, night-time projections and sculptures. The 172nd edition of The Bulletin became a feature of this eclectic mix of new artworks and a way for the Gallery to promote and celebrate their birthday in style.

 

The challenge was how to bring together such a diverse mix of artists and artworks and translate largely programme-like content into an effective editorial piece. We created a system of sidebar details that remained standard throughout the articles, but linked back to an all-encompassing map at the start of the magazine. The cover, gold wrapping and gold ink throughout were designed to capture the reader and dress up the content to celebrate the anniversary.
