Choosing an Existing Example of Packaging Design
I chose to focus on tea packaging for this project. I selected two examples, which already had interesting designs; Tesco's Finest Chocolate Tea and Twining's Blackcurrant and Rhubarb Sensation Tea. I chose to redesign the Twining's Tea packaging.
Chosen Design
I scanned in and photographed the original design for reference.
Drafting a Net
I drafted the net for the new packaging, sketching out the design in pencil on A4 paper. I had to create a net that was possible to be printed on A4 paper, as I do not have access to large scale printing.
Final Net Template
These are the final dimensions of the chosen net laid out using mechanical pencil and technical pen. I scanned this design in to be transferred into Adobe Illustrator.
Rendering Digital Net
Using my scanned in net template to trace from, I rendered the net in Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool to create the cutting lines after printing.
Original Scanned Artwork
I created some original artwork for the packaging using coloured pencil and scanned in my designs.
Edited Artwork
I edited my original scanned artwork in Adobe PhotoShop, using the threshold option to ensure the design was one colour and then recolouring the fill with my chosen colour scheme for each drawing. I saved these in the PNG format to preserve transparency.
Artwork Transferred to Net
In Adobe PhotoShop, I assembled the net and final edited artwork, transforming and rotating the artwork into my chosen design.
Digital Element and Titles Added
Using Adobe InDesign I added title text and digital elements to the design, including the "Best Before End" box and barcode.
Addition of Text
Transferring the design into Adobe InDesign, I then added text, altering the shape of the text boxes so they would conform with the shape of the net and final artwork.
Final Design Mock-Up
Finally, I printed the final design onto matte card using my A4 Canon Printer. I scored each fold line and cut out the design using a scalpel, before assembling and gluing down the tabs to form the final packaging. I then photographed the mock-up packaging, seen below.
Final Product Photographs
I also chose to photograph the packaging as it might be seen in a real-life situation.
