Morro das Neves is a place that is threatenedby the expansion of the Port of Santos (the largest in Latin America), that islocated in Santos, a brazilian city in the São Paulo state.

Many enterprises are buying areas there tobuild big cargo deposits and new harbors for the each time bigger ships thatarrive. In other words, they need to construct over places that are covered bynative flora and that still keep many important archaeological constructions,such as a Jesuit church from the eighteenth century, which was found by mycoworker and I.
 
There are fishermen getting very poor, becausethis activity has been declining since the increasing of other economical activities;mainly those that pollute the water where they fish in and end up with thefauna that tries to survive there. Fishermen’s traditions and their fishing techniques(handcrafted nets, for instance) are getting lost in time and we soon won’t beable to reproduce their way of life.
 
This killing process is being implemented underthe authorization of the Brazilian government, which exports to the rest of theworld an image of development. In my recent visits to the place I discovered thatmany fishermen are suffering from problems that couldn’t exist there, sincethey are neighbors to the largest port in Latin America. Of course these humbleinhabitants are not going to benefit from the “progress” Brasil is constructing.That’s our development model, imported from nations whose only goal is todevastate their natural resources so their population can buy more and more.  

 
O Morro das Neves é um lugar ameaçadopela expansão do Porto de Santos (o maior da América Latina), que se localizana cidade de Santos, uma cidade brasileira do estado de São Paulo.
 
Muitas empresas estãocomprando áreas naquele lugar para construir depósitos de carga e novos atracadourospara os cada vez maiores navios que chegam. Em outras palavras, eles necessitamconstruir em áreas que estão cobertas por flora nativa e que ainda mantêmmuitas construções arqueológicas importantes, como uma igreja jesuíta do séculodezoito, encontrada por mim e meu colega de trabalho.      
 
Há pescadores que estão setornando muito pobres, porque essa atividade está decaindo desde que outrasatividades econômicas começaram a aumentar; especialmente aquelas que poluem aágua onde os pescadores pescam e acabam com a fauna que tenta sobreviver. Astradições dos pescadores e suas técnicas de pesca (redes feitas manualmente,por exemplo) estão se perdendo no tempo e em breve nós não seremos capazes dereproduzir o modo de vida daquelas pessoas.    
 
Esse processe matadorimplementa-se sob a autorização do governo brasileiro, que exporta para o restodo mundo uma imagem de desenvolvimento. Nas minhas recentes visitas ao lugar,descobri que muitos pescadores sofrem de problemas que não poderiam existirnaquele lugar, já que eles são vizinhos do maior porto da América Latina. É óbvioque esses habitantes humildes não vão se beneficiar do progresso construídopelo Brasil. Esse é o nosso modelo de desenvolvimento, importado de nações cujoúnico objetivo é devastar sua natureza para que suas populações possam comprarmais e mais.
