Walking is an effective way of sustaining a healthy weight and increasing bone strength, and can even result in elevated mood levels. In order to effectively walk, a person should remember to always keep the head up and look forward rather than at the ground. Posture is critical to proper walking technique, and an individual should slightly tense the stomach muscles if possible, while keeping the back straight.

Keeping the body generally relaxed is another important aspect of proper walking, particularly the neck and shoulder blades. Finally, to maximize walking as exercise, individuals are advised to swing their arms as they move, slightly bending at the elbows. For a more thorough workout, walkers can pump their arms.
