These paintings are composed of a complex series of layers. I use a variety of techniques to build up the surface, such as: laying the panel on the floor and drizzling paint on it; pouring paint on the surface and tilting the panel; covering the surface with plastic; using a scraper to push the pigment into crevices; and, using sandpaper to expose earlier layers. I also add other mediums to the piece other than the latex and acrylic paint. These additions range from plaster pieces and jar lids to paint skins and glass bead gel. Nearly any object that will enhance the depth of space and create contrast through actual or implied texture is liable to find its way into the creation of each piece.
This body of work focuses on aesthetic elements. Using color, texture, and space, I create spaces that are intended to be mentally stimulating. Combining serendipity and careful planning, the resulting images use tension, contrasting colors, various textures, and unclear suggestions of depth of space and representation to challenge the viewer to form their own ideas and judgments about the work.
