The illustrations are all made by me, the pop-up mechanics took me longer than painting the whole book.
The story of this kids book is about a dutch farmer that wants to be a writer but doesn't know how to tell his story, he tries to communicate his story in every way he can think of.
The book is in dutch, bellow every page I will give a english translation, the translation is not exact but how it should be in english.
This is the story of Johan the miller.
A man with a talent for words as a writer.
Johan was young and full of ambition.
To share his stories, as a man on a mission.
“Today is the day!”
Johan said with firm tone,
“I’m off to be famous and become
the greatest writer ever known!”
“Johanna my wife,”
He said with a smile,
“I won’t be home for dinner,
I’ll be out for a while.”
Johan sat down with a story in his head.
But all he had with him, was some leftover bread.
With the crumbs of the bread he wrote on the ground.
It didn’t take long, for his story to be found.
With a rock in his hand Johan went to the ice,
to carve in his tale he thought that’d be nice.
Along came some skaters, heads down in race.
They scratched out his tale, his words left no trace.
He arrived in the city and went to the square.
The perfect place, for his stories to share.
He talked, he shouted, but nobody heard
the poems he shared, not one single word.
“I need a way for everybody to see,
the stories I have,” so thought he.
He went to a house and wrote on the wall.
With crayons and chalk, to be seen by all.
And so he took off, in the pouring rain.
Riding his bike, just as he came.
On his way back disappointed and alone,
Johan said with a sigh "I am still unkown."
Johan grabbed his laptop and began to write,
"finally a story that seems to stay, it might be all right!"
