3 Day Startup Shirt Design

3 Day Startup is an awesome non profit student entrepreneur incubator that helps kick start new student-run companies and build entrepreneurial capabilities in students and their university communities. Here in Austin, the Spring session for 2015 is being held at the Capitol Factory.

I volunteered the t shirt design for this session, and will be participating as a Design Mentor to facilitate the branding process for each group of students for the event this weekend.

Below is the t shirt design project, along with my process, and a few designs that didn't quite make it. Please enjoy!

My only limitations throughout the process were to design for a single color print onto a single color shirt. Preferably not blue, as there had been several blue designs in the past. (The back of the shirt was reserved for 3DS sponsors.)

Below are a few preliminary ideas that didn't quite make the final cut. It was fun to brainstorm and work them out before the final selection.
This one below was a close runner up. For those of us (including myself) who still aren't tired of the hundreds of clever spin-offs of the original propaganda poster, I created this one which gave the first place a run for it's money. A tribute to Edison's "I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps."
The final design chosen was actually the first idea to hit the paper in my sketchbook. I developed it along with the others, but i think the hand lettering really pushed it to the next level.

I had hoped to steer away from the cliche lightbulb/idea symbol as a main image, but the lettering incorperated into the symbol broke the mold enough to successfully convey something both unique and meaningful to 3 Day Startup's event.
