Martian Tricolore

A series of patterns designed for products available in the Modified Mars giftshop.

The colors red, green and blue have been strongly linked to the idea of terraforming Mars ever since Kim Stanley Robinson published his Mars Trilogy in the 1990's. The colors represent the dreamed future history of the planet, red symbolyzing the planet as it is today, green the process of terraforming and blue the fully transformed world as it one day might be. Since 1999 the red-green-blue has been used as the unofficial Martian flag which has even made it to the International Space Station.

The three colors, being on opposite sides of the color wheel, are not the most logical choices to combine. Martian Tricolore shows however that it's possible to design aestheticly pleasing patterns that play with these symbols of future planetary pride.
