Sometimes I'll hop onto Photoshop, plug in my Intuos, and create a poster from scratch - no prescanned sketches, no premade fonts. This is my process.
the roughest of roughs. determining word hierarchy, spacing, overall form.
second layer draft and repositioning for proportions. i use a custom brush for the Brush and Eraser tools, at 100% opacity, no pen pressure settings. lots of 'B' and 'E' switching at this stage.
some readjusting, and filling in the gaps with, uh, curlies...? embellishments? let's go with embellishments.
detail - messy embellishment drafts, fixing margins. protip: it's all about the margins!
using the select layer -> new channel -> gaussian blur -> levels tweaking -> select channel -> new layer -> fill technique to get a clean, vintage-ink look.
the final product. dragged in some textures I've collected over the years, added some layer styles...voila.
