Insight into the series by the artist -

This current work in progress is inspired by Russian propaganda posters from the early 20th century. These communist posters were bold, colourful and verymasculine in their designs. These works emulate the geometry and strong colours from the original posters. By using only the 3 colours, red, black and gold,it gives these paintings a graphic, political and regal feel. The expressive and loose painting style creates a wonderful juxta positioning against the strongangular shapes that frame them.

“It’s almost as if the abstract faces rebel against the rigid nature of the original pieces of propaganda.” says Schalk.
