THIS PROJECT for smalto mosaic was designed for one of the front walls of  the central staircase inside the main building of the University of Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria.
Four monumental artists created different mosaic projects depicting emblematic periods in Bulgarian history for each floor of the central staircase inside the University.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT: My project was designed for the second floor and features the Golden Age of medieval Bulgaria i.e. the reign of emperor Simeon I the Great (889—927).
Simeon I achieved spectacular military, political & cultural success, and even forcing the Byzantine Empire to recognise the imperial title of the Bulgarian monarchs.
During Simeon's rule, Bulgaria spread over a territory between the Aegean, the Adriatic and the Black Sea and the new Bulgarian capital Preslav was said to rival Constantinople.

BFRIEF IDEA: Therefore the idea of my mosaic project is to resemble an old stylized map of Bulgaria stretching towards the shores of the 3 seas - the Aegean, the Adriatic and the Black Sea.
The Bulgarian state is depicted like an eagle - a widely spread heraldic symbol in the Byzantine Empire, used in the Bulgarian heraldic tradition as well (for more info check the symbolism of the double-headed eagle).

In the center of the composition (which is the very body of the eagle), tracing the shape of contemporary Bulgaria, is introduced the silhouette of a sleeping lion (nowadays the lion is a symbol of the Bulgarian state as well).

TECHNICIALITIES: The original brick wall of the staircase is incorporated in the mosaic composition. It is visible outside the map and in certain parts of the eagle - like the paws which stretch towards Byzantine, but never reach it.
Over the mosaic will be placed a transparent plexiglass panel. Cartographic & historical symbols are engraved on it to trace the most significant military campaigns, battles, conquests and cultural achievements of the Golden Age.

MATERIALS:
Acrylic paint on paper /for the project/
Smalto /for the detail in material/
