Modernizing the East Falls Station

After analyzing the history of East Falls, it has become apparent that the train’s ability to connect residents to center city Philadelphia was the driving force for the development of this town. Building upon that primary notion of connection, we are striving to create our own connection between the residents and the station that
they use so frequently. By making the new station more usable, functional, and accessable, the people have the connection to arriving at the station. Narrowing in, it is important that the north and south side of the tracks are visually and physically connected as well. By making the stations face the direction by which their respective train is coming, users of the station have an enhanced visual connection to the train itself in the moments they would need it. Finally to refer back to the origins of connection the people of East Falls to the city, the south facade capitalizes on the views towards the city to express a visual relationship with the destination of many travelers.
The design of the interior is focused around our linear principle. By placing the solid structures on the east side, it opens up the rest of the building to the view of the oncoming train. The neutral tones enforce a connection to the environment. The south facade being largely glazing helps bring the outside in, and the inside out.
Our model exploration largely revolved around developing the site around our building, and making changes to the building that would engage the site.By working a ramp up the site from Midvale Ave. we were able to create a series of gardens that would act as multipurpose spaces for the community of East Falls throughout the year.
