Battle of the Elements

Avatar Risk Map

This was a passion project I had been working on periodically for a year. I play long-term games of Risk (the board game) online with friends, and was always thinking about making a playable map. One of my favourite shows are Avatar: The Last Airbender and it's sequal The Legend of Korra, both of which have such a detailed and beautiful world that translates well into a map.
With such a rich world, there are a lot of maps, which made planning the map very easy. The longest part of the project was drawing the continents out in illutstrator. Creating it in a vector format allowed for easy simplification of small and overly complicated areas. This was especially useful for rivers that are used as territory borders. As far as defining countries and territories went, the show had done most of that work.
Appa, the Flying Bison, is one of my favourtie characters. So when I decided to add a connection between territoties at other ends of the board, I knew Appa was the symbol I wanted to use on the connected territories. Using one of the shows original concept art, I redrew the image in illustrator, simplifying as much as possible. In order to allow for two seperate connections.
