CVPA Calendar
Designed by Matthew Cousineau
Objective
The project goal was to create a calendar showcasing student work that was both visually interesting and provided valuable information highlighting the many College of Visual and Performing Arts events taking place each month during the year. The project aimed to raise awareness of events to faculty, staff, alumni, donors and patrons of the arts, all while enhancing the overall university brand, and visibility of the college and departments.

Method
The calendar endeavored to capture the diverse talents of our students in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) by portraying their high quality, creative work through an elegant and simple design. This was achieved through the use of one large graphic primarily of student work, which also provided the background color for the calendar portion on the lower part of the page. When available, smaller, inset photos of other work exhibiting during the month were used to accent the calendar.

At the same time, the calendar needed to communicate a great wealth of specific information about CVPA events, posing a unique challenge of including an abundance of information each month.  The layout grid and guidelines were based on the seven days of the week calendar columns. Keeping information for each event uniform and color coordinated by performance area helped to reduce visual clutter.

The final folded format size of 8 x 10 inches was used to keep mailing cost down while keeping the overall calendar spread size at a readable level. Any larger final format would have increased mailing costs. Any smaller size would cause readability issues.

Staff Resources
The project was a collaboration between the Office of Special Projects within the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Office of University Relations. The project director of the Office of Special Projects worked with the graphic designer and director of publications and printing to develop the concept and provide content.

Budget
The project’s budget was $3,500 and the completed job of 3,400 units came in right under budget at $3,413. The unit cost was $1 per piece.

Results
Approximately 1700 calendars were mailed out to patrons of the arts, while others were hand distributed across campus and at arts events. The project received positive comments from individuals and can be seen displayed proudly in offices across campus.
