Liberty City Gift Shop

Liberty City Gift Shop

2010
Client: Amsterdam 4/5 May Committee
This temporary cosy gift shop was inspired by both the museum shop and the cheap-ass discount store. The Liberty City Gift Shop sells all kinds of objects and tools that have been of great importance to specific historical freedom struggles in The Netherlands. For instance knitting needles that were commonly used to kill the ‘unborn fruit’ in the days abortion was illegal, or nicely packaged burnt bras which were considered symbols in the battle against prevailing beauty ideals.

The shop was part of the Liberty City exhibition, that took place for the occasion of Liberation Day in The Netherlands, and was opened for one month. All products in the shop are rather common, but the shop concept, the pricing and the packages increase their symbolic value as pure Dutch freedom relics. Since the shop design was strongly inspired by a famous Dutch discount store chain, we want to stimulate thought and discussion about the price of freedom. Is freedom for sale and how much is freedom worth?
