Antuérpia suporta o segundo maior porto da Europa e, ainda assim, sente a necessidade de o expandir. Os primeiros planos para a expansão, na margem esquerda do rio Schelde, na vila de Doel, datam de 1963. Volvidos 50 anos, Doel apenas se tornou numa vila abandonada porque a maior parte dos seus habitantes foram forçados a vender as suas casas, restando apenas, em 2013, 26 habitantes, que continuam a lutar contra essa destruição. Num ambiente sombrio e digno de um cenário de um filme, convivi com esta comunidade. Ouvi as suas histórias e percebi o que se esforçam por defender. Vivi uma experiência que nunca julguei ser possível, em Doel – a vila abandonada.
Antwerp has the second largest port in Europe and still needs to expand it. The first plans for expansion dates 1963, on the left margin of the Scheldt River, in the village of Doel. Because of this constant expansion, after 50 years, Doel just became an abandoned village. Along the years most of the people were forced to sell their houses and in 2013 the active population in Doel was only of 26 people.
In a somber atmosphere and worthy of a scene from a movie, I lived and shared emotions with this community. I heard their stories and realized who strive and fought to uphold. I had an experience that never thought was possible, in Doel - the abandoned village.
