An Enemy of the People

An Enemy of the People
by Henrik Ibsen
Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People is set in Southern Norway in 1882.  The Stockmanns have recently moved to the small coastal town.  They previously lived in the far north and were very poor.  They have arrived at this new town and are trying to fit in when Dr. Stockmann discovers that the baths the town hopes will make them famous are polluted.
Dr. Stockmann is very scatterbrained.  He makes an effort to keep himself well dressed, but as he goes through his day he tends to become more disheveled.

As mayor, Peter Stockmann is never seen without his hat and stick.  He is a proper gentleman who values appearances.

Captain Horster is a seafarer.  Even though he owns the house the Stockmanns are staying in he is used to the hard work and trials of the sea.  His dress is less formal than that of those who live in the town.

Katherine Stockmann was not born to money and therefore values her families status more than her husband does.  Katherine likes to dress well, but as an older woman, she keeps the older style of bustle.

Petra Stockmann is a young and capable woman.  She feels privileged and likes being the center of attention.  She is also a working woman, so she must look proper even while outside of the house.

Morten is young and rambunctious.  Katherine tries to keep him well dressed, but as he plays he does not bother to keep his clothes clean and tidy.
